Graduate Research School
The University of Bordeaux Graduate Research School is a structure entirely devoted to doctoral studies.
The Graduate Research School’s ambition is to coordinate the entire field of doctoral studies, between the training colleges and the research departments, and to create a single point of contact for doctoral students and their thesis supervisors, in coordination with the doctoral schools.
Roger Marthan — Director The Graduate Research School
A doctorate central reception
The Graduate Research School offers a single access point for doctoral students and quality support service for PhD students and their thesis directors. It gathers students and disciplines from the 8 doctoral schools of the university of Bordeaux. 2000 doctoral students are enrolled in the university of Bordeaux and about 500 defend their thesis every year.
Although the management and some of its 20 staff are physically located on the ground floor of building A33 on the Talence campus, the administrative managers of the doctoral schools will remain on their sites, maintaining the functional link with the Director of their doctoral school. The College’s main missions are the visibility and identity of the University of Bordeaux doctorate, transversal doctoral training, career development, internationalization, student life, etc
The Graduate Research School is also responsible for enacting the new decree of 25 May 2016 laying down the national training framework and the procedures leading to the awarding of the national doctorate qualification.
To achieve these aims, different actions are gradually being implemented as the new secure information system called Adum (Accès doctorat unique mutualisé).
The Graduate Research School also offers a catalog of 70 professional training modules allowing doctoral students to acquire complementary skills such as teaching, research ethics, managerial skills, etc.
Our training modules result from a joint initiative with the University of Bordeaux Montaigne.
The internationalization office benefits from a specific call for doctoral cotutelle programs, which are particularly encouraged with an extended number of international partners specifically involved at doctoral level. The number of English-language training modules also increases every year.
The Graduate Research School also has a role in organizing doctoral events : formal academic meeting of doctoral students, thesis Prize, Partnership with PhD Students Associations.
The Graduate Research School board meets once a month and the plenary council three times a year. Lastly, this council will be soon assisted by a Scientific Advisory Board made up of doctoral officials from European universitie.
The Graduate Research School in collaboration with the doctoral schools, offers services for answering any questions about enrollment, doctoral contracts, the possibility of going abroad, and/or international co-supervision arrangements, etc. It helps the university’s 2,000 doctoral students to optimize their career development in different professional sectors, in either a national or international context.
