Plan the international mobility

For a successful mobility project, it is important to plan ahead

1. Discuss your mobility project with your supervisor

Any mobility should be approved by your thesis supervision and your research unit. In addition, you should rely on their network for getting in touch with research teams of your specialty abroad.

2. Searching for funding opportunities

The search for funding for a mobility abroad must be anticipated: calls for applications for funding must be made several months or even a year before the mobility departure.

  • your research unit
  • the Graduate Research School via
    • your affiliated doctoral school
    • if applicable, your Graduate Program
    • the internationalization office

It is also important to adopt a strategic monitoring approach in order to identify funding opportunities that are adapted to your project.

Think about subscribing to the mailing lists and news of associations, foundations, research centers, laboratories in your field... And don't hesitate to gather feedback from (post)-docs who have already left.

Some grants are offered by embassies as part of bilateral programs or by organizations promoting culture and higher education.

To know about funding opportunities from the Graduate Research School and the University of Bordeaux, please consult your institutional e-mail address and the following page: Funding programs for international mobility

3. Plan ahead administrative formalities: visa, housing, driving license, insurance…

Do not hesitate to seek advice from your colleagues (researchers, doctoral and post-doctoral students) who went through this.

Reminder

For any travel (abroad or in France) within the framework of your research work, you must be in possession of a mission order (with or without expenses) established by your research unit or your employer if applicable.
