The HDR authorization to supervise research is regulated by the Order of  November 23, 1988.

To apply for the HDR qualification

Registrations can only be made with one institution during the same academic year. Candidates who have already registered for this qualification in another institution must notify this (Article 3, Order of November, 23 1988).

Application modalities

Pre-examination is initially carried out by the doctoral school competent in the speciality.

The candidate must contact the doctoral school  to submit an application including :

• A detailed CV,
• A copy of their qualifications,
• A List of research publications,
• A summary of their scientific work (number of pages specified by the doctoral schools).

The application is studied by a reviewer (from outside the research team).

The doctoral school council formulates an opinion before transmitting the application files to the Graduate Research School.

Candidates who have obtained a favorable opinion will be contacted directly to register for training in the supervision of doctoral students.

Mandatory supervision training follow-up

Successful applicants will be contacted directly to register for doctoral student supervision training.

Academic Council Authorization

Only candidates who have completed the training will be presented to the Academic Council (restricted formation) for authorization.

The academic council of the university deliberates 3 times per academic year (October, March and June).

At the end of each session, the Graduate Research School informs the candidate and the doctoral school of the decision.

The candidate has 2 years to defend his/her HDR. If the candidate does not defend the HDR within the allotted time, it is up to the candidate to request a new authorization from his/her doctoral school.

IMPORTANT : the authorization to register for the HDR is "worth" the attribution of ADT (whose level of requirement is lower).

The status of supervisor is not recognized by the decree of May 25, 2016. However, the ADT qualification recognizes the supervision or co-supervision work, according to the terms and conditions defined at the university of Bordeaux.

It can be awarded to a researcher or teacher-researcher without HDR authorization, to enable them to supervise or co-supervise a thesis before authorization.

ADT applications must be sent the doctoral school competent in the specialty and examined according to the HDR timetable.
